Master’s thesis project based on the investigation of the interaction we have with furniture in the public space, and the tension between the function of furniture in the private and public realms.

The design was informed by the identification of furniture archetypes of the 17th, 18th and 19th century representing different levels of engagement in conversation, which was then translated to seating angles and heights in the final design.

Research was completed with the help of San Francisco’s Public Works Dept, the MTA and the SF Planning Dept (among others), and under the direction of Ted Renteria (Industrial Designer and Lecturer at Academy of Art University). Design was completed under the direction of Jess Sorel (Furniture Designer, lecturer at AAU) and Susan Kralovec (Industrial Designer, lecturer at AAU). Scale and full size models were built in GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) with the help and under the supervision of Buddy Rhodes of Buddy Rhodes Concrete.
